In Korea, the drone (multicopter) pilot certificate is divided into Class 1 through Class 4 depending on the maximum take-off weight and intended use of the aircraft you plan to fly. Requirements and exam procedures differ by class, so the first step is deciding what you actually want to do with a drone.
The four classes at a glance
- Class 1: Over 25kg up to 150kg empty weight. Mostly required for large industrial aircraft used in spraying, surveying, and similar professional work. Both written and practical exams are required.
- Class 2: Over 7kg up to 25kg. The most common certificate for beginners, general filming, and education. Also requires both written and practical exams.
- Class 3 and 4: Cover lighter aircraft, and depending on the class can be obtained through online training or a simplified process without a practical exam.
Which one should you get first?
If your goal is industrial solutions or aerial filming, we recommend starting with Class 2 and later expanding to Class 1 if needed. Class 2 aircraft are easier to access for practice, and most training programs are well structured around it — a solid foundation for beginners. If large industrial aircraft or spraying work is your goal, going straight for Class 1 can save time.
