Why Class 2 Is the Best Starting Point for Drone Beginners

For people new to drones, we usually recommend starting with the Class 2 certificate (over 7kg up to 25kg). It has a low barrier to entry while still leaving room to grow into more advanced, industrial use.

Why Class 2 makes sense to start with

  • Most general filming and training aircraft fall in this weight range, so practice equipment is easy to access.
  • The written and practical exam process is well established, making it easy for first-time applicants to prepare step by step.
  • There's a clear path to expand into Class 1 later if needed.
  • It's a good difficulty level for building basic flight sense and safety habits.

Even for industrial goals, start with Class 2

Even if your ultimate goal is large industrial aircraft, building fundamentals with Class 2 first before moving to Class 1 tends to improve your pass rate. Starting directly on large aircraft often means spending extra time just on basic control before you can focus on the harder skills.

If you're a beginner, we recommend building solid flight sense and procedure with Class 2 first, then moving on to an advanced certificate or specialized fieldwork training based on your target industry.
